Best animes of 2023: an unmissable selection for fans of Japanese animation
Anime is an art form that conquers millions of fans around the world, with its engaging stories, charismatic characters, striking soundtracks and high-quality animations. Each year, new anime are released, bringing news and surprises to viewers. But what are the best anime of 2023? What are the ones that you absolutely cannot miss?
To answer this question, I did a search on the web and selected the 10 anime that stood out the most in 2023, taking into account popularity, critical reception, genre and release date. Additionally, I’ll also give you a brief synopsis and a link to the trailer for each one, so you have an idea of what to expect. So, prepare the popcorn, soda and remote control, because you’re going to want to watch all these anime!
1. Dr Stone: New World
Genre: Adventure, Comedy, Science Fiction Release date: April 6 Synopsis: Dr Stone is one of the most watched anime in the world, and returns in 2023 with the new season, Dr Stone: New World. In the original story, a mysterious phenomenon turned all of humanity to stone. Student Taiju Oki woke up and freed himself from the stone, but saw that the year was 5738. However, he was surprised to find his best friend, the brilliant Senku Ishigami, also alive and free from petrification. They came together to use science and free people. The trailer shows that the second year of the anime will have Senku and the Kingdom of Science investigating the mystery of petrification and looking for other ways to rebuild humanity. The season will have two parts.

2. Demon Slayer (movie and 3rd season)
Genre: shounen, action, fighting Premiere: March and April Synopsis: Demon Slayer already has a season and a movie, and there’s even more news! Tanjiro Kamado and the other demon hunters of the Demon Sayer Corps will face the long-awaited Blacksmith Village Arc. The season will begin in April, with a special one-hour episode. But first, fans will be able to watch the film Rumo à Vila dos Ferreiros. The film will arrive in several countries in March, and will show the last episodes of the previous arc and the first episode of the new arc. Demon Slayer is one of the most popular anime at the moment, and tells the story of Tanjiro, a young man who became a demon hunter after the terrible King of Demons destroyed his village, killed his family and turned his younger sister into a demon.

3. Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku
Genre: shounen, action, Fantasy Release date: April 1st Synopsis: Another production from the acclaimed studio MAPPA (Attack on Titan, Banana Fish, Yuri!!! on Ice), this anime takes place during the Edo period of Japan and follows the search of the ninja Gabimaru and the executioner Yamada Asaemon Sagiri for the elixir of immortality. Sentenced to execution for his crimes, Gabimaru surprises everyone with his superhuman body, and nothing or no one seems capable of killing him. However, this is when Sagiri offers him the opportunity to have his crimes forgiven, in return he must participate in the group of convicts who will set out in search of the elixir of life in the legendary kingdom Shinsenkyo. Each convict will be accompanied by an executioner on the mission that has already killed five expedition teams.

Premiering in 2022, the anime follows the life of a spy who resolves political conflicts with the aim of saving the world. However, for his new mission to be successful, he must forge a perfect family with assassin Yor Forger and a child with psychic abilities named Anya.4.

5. Oshi no Ko
Genre: drama, supernatural Release date: 2022 Synopsis: Ai Hoshino is a rising idol on the Japanese music scene. Despite maintaining an innocent appearance to her audience, she keeps a big secret. One of her biggest fans is doctor Gorou Amemiya. When Ai arrives at his office claiming that she is pregnant with twins, the relationship between the two changes completely and new secrets are revealed.

6. Blue Lock
Genre: sport Release date: 2022 Synopsis: After losing the chance to take his football team to the national competition, Yoichi Isagi receives an invitation to participate in the Japan Football Union’s controversial Blue Lock project. Three hundred young under-18 attackers compete in a series of individual and team challenges to become the national team’s next star striker. Despite ethical objections, Isagi strives to surpass the other competitors and reach the top, even if it means nullifying the dreams of his colleagues.

7. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners
Genre: adventure Release date: 2022 Synopsis: With its premiere in 2022, in a collaboration between CD PROJEKT RED, Studio Trigger and Netflix, this anime was one of the great promises of the year. Furthermore, David Martinez lives in the distant future and Try to survive in a world dominated by technology. One day, he decides to take control of his life, becoming an edgerunner (outlaw mercenary).
8. Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken ( That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime
Genre: Isekai Release date: 2022 Synopsis: Isekai is a subgenre of anime and manga in which the protagonist is taken to a parallel universe. In Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken, that’s exactly what happens. Satoru Mikami dies and is reincarnated in another universe in the form of a slime. A slime is a formless, gelatinous creature considered one of the weakest monsters in the world. However, Satoru discovers that he possesses special abilities, such as absorbing and copying the characteristics of other beings. Thus, he begins to explore the new world, making friends and enemies.
